Mrs Mary Ann Watkins

Woman With One Blue Eye and One Brown

One immediately notices that the body and head of Mrs. Watkins in turned to the three-quarter view. A deeper analysis shows that she either has heterochromia, usually a benign genetic condition in which each eye is a different color, or she is blind in one eye. In the case of Mrs. Watkins one eye is brown and the other blue. The brown eye render with a less defined iris which appears to be deliberate.

Attribution of the sitter comes from a graphite notation on the back which was under a newspaper of which a small bit remains. No artist signature.
